         BIOGRAPHY

My name is Richard Read.  I was  born in Poughkeepsie, New York on September 3, 1972 and raised in Millerton.  My father was an IBM'er and my mother an accountant at Sharon Hospital.  They did well and as a result probably the greatest benefit I recieved was the gift of travel.

I've seen every state (except Hawaii and Alaska) and visitd nearly every major National Park. I was able to see alot abroad in the Navy as well; including: Spain, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, Italy, France and even spent a few months off the coast of Mogadishu, Somalia during that conflict.

I attended Webutuck HS until my junior year when my parents split.  My father moved to Albany, having already retired from IBM, and decided to teach at SUNY Albany (lest he lose his mind in retirement).  I went with him and graduated from Bethlehem Central located in Delmar (an affluent Albany suburb).

From there I was off to college where I proceeded to drink entirely too much and study far too little, finding little interest in any classes not directly related to art.  Following two straight semesters of academic probation my father decided he'd contributed enough to my 'experience' and I needed to figure out how to pay for college if I intended to continue.

I decided the Navy could help me with both discipline and college via the GI Bill.  I loved it...and remain grateful to this day for the experience.

Upon completion of my contract, I moved back to Millerton.  I had several friendships that had endured the years, and I really just love the tri-state area.  Well, I got into a relationship, took on bills and got myself into the paint trade.  The Navy had really begun my painting career, but it was a little different prepping and painting metal spaces.  It was, and remains useful to have worked following OSHA regulations to the letter.

Having always had an affinity for the straight line, a love of art and color, and a desire to feel a satisfaction for job well done at the end of the day...painting was a natural fit.

Anyway, I was lucky.  I started with a company called Old Country Painting in 1994.  Old Country should really have been called 'Old School'!  I wasn't allowed to hold a brush for almost a year as I learned how to prep properly.  Even then I was only allowed to prime for another year as I worked on speed, coverage, feathering, etc... This, I believe, was critical to becoming the master I am today.  Prep is truly 80% of painitng (at least!).  Anyone can slap a fresh coat of paint on something and it will no doubt look better than it did.  But to have that paint endure for a decade...quite another matter indeed!

I got married to the woman of my dreams (cliche but true) and in Jan. 2005 our son was born.  And in August of 2006 I took Artisan Paintworks from just being my title as a sub to a full fledged independent business.  Frankly, every day since has been devoted to growing and developing our family and our business together.

I am building Artisan Paintworks not just to support my family, but with the hope that one day, if Ricky and Roslyn want, there will be a painting empire that spans from Albany to NYC (and maybe national on some level) for them to take into the next generation.  Aside from working on a day to day basis, I strive to continue my education and be on the cutting edge of current paint trends and technologies.

My education, time in trade, motivation and natural artistic ability set me and Artisan above the cut.  But hey, don't take my word for it...visit my reference page and give a call!  I love what I do and take enormous pride in what I do.  If a smoke-free, immaculate job site is important to you, as well as having things done right the first time backed up by a warranty unparalleled in this trade (2-5 years depending) then give me a call with confidence that your search fora painter has ended.

THANK YOU
